activities this holiday season

In the Lowcountry, our holiday season looks a little different from your average Hallmark movie. While much of the country brace themselves for freezing temperatures and crosses their fingers in the hopes of a white Christmas, the mild temperatures and sunny days in the Charleston area allow for unique ways to celebrate the season. While some families play in the snow, down south, we can still play in the sand in the month of December. Here are some of our favorite Charleston family activities this holiday season:

Attend Christmas Parades

No matter where you are in the Charleston area, there are numerous parades, tree lightings, and other fun holiday events to attend. Unlike other cities that require multiple layers to stay warm, attending the holiday happenings in the Lowcountry doesn’t mean you’ll have to brave the cold. Another local favorite event in the Charleston area is the holiday boat parade. It’s also common to hold holiday-themed fun runs in parks and on the beaches as a way to stay active and festive. While we may not have snow, Charleston and its surrounding areas know how to make the most of the holiday season!

Winter Beach Day

With average December temperatures remaining in the 60s, a beach day is one of the more unique family activities this holiday season. Whether you bring blankets and snuggle up, or you get a permit for a beach bonfire on Sullivan’s Island, IOP Beach Chairs can make sure your family’s beach day is comfortable and enjoyable. While some families shelter from winter storms drinking hot cocoa in their homes, the Charleston-area beaches are a perfect place to bring your hot chocolate and relax in the fresh air. Make the most of your winter break by vacationing in Charleston and enjoying the beach without the crowds and sunburns.

Make Gingerbread Houses

Getting crafty and creative with gingerbread houses is a great way to spend an evening together as a family. Traditional gingerbread houses take inspiration from snowy wonderlands like the North Pole, but if you’re vacationing in Charleston this holiday season, get clever with your houses and construct a beach house or create a beach scene with your gingerbread materials. No matter what you decide to design, gingerbread houses are one of the fun family activities this holiday season.

Check Out Christmas Light Displays

From James Island County Park to small neighborhoods, Charleston locals love to decorate for Christmas. Taking in the holiday lights is a favorite pastime in all parts of the country, but in the Lowcountry, you don’t have to worry about poor conditions on the road or to have to remain in a heated car. In fact, some of the best ways to take in the Christmas Light Displays are by cycling around your beach community! IOP Beach Chairs provides bikes for all ages, including a children’s seat to add on to the back of an adult-sized bicycle. From helmets to baskets, we can help you take in the holiday lights for a Christmas activity your family won’t forget.

Volunteer

Giving back is one of the reasons for the season, which is why volunteering is always an activity worth considering, even if you’re just passing through. Take an evening to volunteer at a local soup kitchen, or even just spend a couple of hours scanning the beach for potential trash. It’s always a good time to volunteer, but giving back is always considered one of the best activities this holiday season and for future holiday seasons to come.
